and where can i get it?

A Jewish bible is called a Tanach and contains the same books as the Christian "OT" except they are in A different order. Most (not all) Tanachs have both the Hebrew and English , either on opposite pages or in columns side by side. You should be able to find a Tanach in most bookstores or order one online.

To correct another answer, "The complete jewish Bible" is NOT a Jewish bible but a Messianic version of the Christian bible. I have never seen one of these that actually contained the Hebrew which is what the question was about to begin with.

What are the best books about Jewish characters?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

What are good books that have jewish main characters / "Jewish themed" books? I’m Jewish and I just want some good books to read during winter break. What are your suggestions?
I’m 16 years old

Hi Hannah (the Jewish Princess)

What age-range are you looking for?

A classic, no matter what age, I would say is Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (http://www.loislowry.com/number_stars.html) I’m sure you know it, but if you haven’t heard of it I’ll cut and paste a short synapsis:

"How brave are you, little Annemarie?" Uncle Henrik asks his ten-year-old niece. It is 1943, and to Annemarie Johansen, life in Copenhagen is a complicated mix of ordinary home and school life, food shortages, and the constant presence of Nazi soldiers. Bravery seems a vague virtue, one possessed by dragon-slaying knights in the bedtime stories she tells her younger sister, Kirsti. Too soon, she herself is called upon for courage.

As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, the Johansens take in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and pretend she is part of the family. Ellen and Annemarie must think quickly when three Nazi officers arrive late one night and question why Ellen is not blond, like her sisters.

Through Annemarie’s eyes, we see the Danish Resistance as they manage to smuggle almost the entire Jewish population, nearly 7000 people, across the sea to Sweden. In this tale of an entire nation’s heroism, Lois Lowry reminds us that there is pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.

For more sophisticated books that will last longer than two or three days a good source of books is http://www.eichlers.com/ where you could look up some interesting titles, then go to http://www.amazon.com to maybe read a few pages to see if you like it.

I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll love!

Good luck!

Is it supreme arrogance for Christians to assume their interpretation of the Jewish holy book is the truth?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Is it the same as going up to J.K. Rowling and telling her that your interpretation of the Harry Potter books is better than hers?

I think it is supremely arrogant for anyone to impose their interpretation of anything onto anyone else. There is nothing wrong, however, in studying, and living by your own interpretations.
And btw, your example of J.K. Rowling, is not a good one. I’ve been to a number of events where authors speak, and take questions from the audience. A good number of them are interested in hearing how the readers interpret their work.
Peace and Namaste!

Which books of the bible do the jewish people consider holy?

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Well, it always helps to get an answer from a Jew…… Our bible, known as the Tanakh, was translated and re-ordered and slightly altered to form the Christian "Old Testament". You can find the structure of the Tanakh and list of the books here: http://www.jewfaq.org/torah.htm#Written

Looking for name of childrens book series about Jewish family?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

I am looking for a series of books about a jewish family living in america I think about the turn of the 20th century. They are very much in the same style as the little house on the prairie books. I remember there were 5 girls, living with their parents, either in new york or new jersey. The books tell about their lives, going to prayer, how things were done in their household, jewish traditions.
I think the books were published in the 1950’s, or thereabout.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

The book you’re looking for is ‘All of a Kind Family’ by Sydney Taylor, if I’m not mistaken. Here is a synopsis below, as well as a link to Amazon to purchase it. I LOVED this book growing up. There’s also a sequel, ‘More All of a Kind Family’.

Classic story of five little girls living with their parents in New York City at the turn of the century. They have simple but happy times as they share adventures, holidays and surprises. When Mama tells them her big new, it’s the most wonderful surprise of all.
