Jesus of Nazareth is the only human being in history who turned all of mankind on its head within a few centuries after dying.

Only a messiah can do that, so we pretty much have no problem identifying him.

(Atheists have a huge problem to reckon with their lack of belief: the Roman Empire was attacked on all sides by barbarians and civilized empires alike throughout it’s history, but this religion, Christianity, overturned the entire Roman culture from within, something not even the great Greek religions could do. Should we just pretend this never happened and live in delusion?)

Could this have any significance for Jewish identity? Because in Judaism ethnicity is passed through the mother. If this were the case Judaism’s homeland would be Turkey. And couldnt this be reason for respect towards people of this Land?

Passover reminds Jews that God chose them as a special nation to erect the throne of His Messiah of David. God brought the plagues of Exodus on the Egyptians, while the Hebrews, who sacrificed perfect lambs, were saved from the Messenger of death. Israel, the firstborn nation of God, was saved whereas the firstborn of the Egyptians were not. Pesach also keeps prophecy open. Jews leave a cup for Elijah, knowing that one day he will come and reveal all truth for the coming kingdom of Zion. So Jews leave the door open, for legend has it that Elijah can come to you at any time, even right now.

What does it mean for a jewish person to have that identity? Why is there such a thing as a jewish identity? Is it because of the history or other things? How is the feeling of jewish identity being created by a jew?

Hope I can get some answers from someone out there. Thank you!

A Jewish identity is, simply, the fact that one identifies themselves with the Jewish population of the world, or more specifically, as a Jew themselves. It means that they feel that they are Jewish, either via religion, culture or both, and that they associate themselves with Jewish roots.

Why is there such thing? Well, why is there a black identity? A native identity? A hispanic identity? Being a Jew means that you are affiliated with a group that has existed for thousands of years and has a specific culture and/or religious choice. Perhaps it has grown stronger throughout history, because Jews lived, in many cases, in places where they were persecuted, discriminated against and hated, and it was only by associating with other Jews that they could keep safe, and that by overcoming the odds they felt even more proud to be a Jew.

Being a Jew means being part of a society that has overcome genocide, mass discrimination and attempted conversion for thousands of years and yet you still stand here today. You are part of a group that the Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Christians, Muslims, Germans, and countless other groups throughout history tried to exterminate by any means neccesary, and yet you are still here and still Jewish.

@Nabil
I’m guessing you are anti-zionist, whatever floats your boat. However, I hope you know that the Haredim in Israel are some of the most ardent opponents of any negotiations with Arabs or coexistence with other religions while the more secular Israeli community is always open for negotiations and peaceful coexistence with anyone.
@Tron
You should ask the Haredim why they hate non-orthodox Jews and dont even consider them Jews at all, that is until they build a country for them to safely live in. By your logic, the moderate Muslim community should also listen to its right wing "pious" radicals who believe that any Muslim who doesn’t kill the nonbeliever should be stoned.
@Nabil
While the 98% of us hate the 2% of you
@Nabil
No worries Nabil, I know exactly where I stand, cant say the same about you unfortunately.
@Nabil
No problems supporting the terrorist murderers of Hezbollah I see.

"The relationship between Haredim and Zionism has always been a difficult one. Before the establishment of the State of Israel, the majority of Haredi Jewry was opposed to Zionism. However, after the de facto creation of the state, each individual movement within Orthodox Judaism charted its own path in their approach to the State of Israel."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haredim_and_Zionism

You know what’s funny? They don’t have a clue that these groups are mostly opposed to Israel for being a SECULAR state, they do not want to live in a mixed society, at all.

"61% of haredim in Israel prefer to live among themselves, rather than alongside secular communities, survey by Geocartography Research Institute finds."

http://www.jpost.com/NationalNews/Article.aspx?id=203040

—-

NABIL: Almost all the community (1948: 20,000-2008: fewer than 100) emigrated to ISRAEL, France, and North America. There are more Lebanese Jews in Israel than in Lebanon. more than 4000. Your theory fails, obviously.

Yes. actually there was a famous case like this. Hitlerjunge Salomon (Hitler Youth Salomon).
A Jewish boy who actually posed as a ‘real’ German and joined the Hiler Youth to survive the Holocaust. He lives in israel now.

for example if a jew is british will they consider themselves british as well as jewish or will they consider themselves more Jewish than british and hence be guided by jewish culture values and behaviors rather than british

There are references to "those who call themselves the JEws , but are in fact the synagogue of satan" (words of Jesus) THe USA JEws have changed the story as it is , in the bible..THey now keep the lineage by the woman’s name/ while in the bible, the family lineage is kept by the seed of the man..Paul’s confusing ," anybody and everybody is a Jew" speech leads to further confusion..In the bible: the sons of the man Jacob(whose name was changed to Isreal by an angel of the Lord) are the JEws/ The nation of Israel..THe twelve tribes of Isreal are the bloodline descendants of the man Jacob. God did not make a covenant with Moses. HE made that covenant with the entire nation of Israel , with Moses standing as their spokesman..Jews (the nation of Israel) should acknowledge themselves as Israel, regardless of what country they live in..To answer your question , though, many (like the USA Jews) do not understand the bible well enough. THey probably consider themselves USA citizens , as much as Jews
