My first experience with Jewish Story-telling happened at a Congregation Eitz Or Chanukkah celebration. It’s traditional that nothing utilitarian at all is done by the light of Chanukkah candles, not even reading! This is a time family and friends gather for songs sung and stories told by heart. In the high-participation style typical of Jewish Renewal, everyone was being urged to come up and start a song or tell a story, and finally, when there was only one tiny little flame left guttering at the farthest edge of the Chanukiah, I came to the front, and I told this story– not to the gathering, but to that last little light.

This is a question, not an attack. Atheists I was working with (one coming from Jewish blood) explained that Jews always looked at stories like creation, Noah’s Ark, etc. only as fable stories and never took them literally. Furthermore said, only in America, in post-Darwin times, do Christian Americans believe literally in Genesis writings and the young earth theory.
I’m not trying to change their beliefs, but had to ask what Jews (born, raised, and maybe living in the original homeland believe, not ones now living in Chicago, actually believe… That would be like people asking me about Polish or German people. How should I know? It’s been generations since my ancestors were born there.)

I wouldn’t go so far as to call all of them "fables." But, we definitely do NOT consider them to be "literally" true in the way that Christian fundamentalists do.

So, Jews may believe that the Bible says G-d created the world in 6 days. But, we have never had any dogma that "6 days" means 6 human 24 hour cycles. While we don’t have dogma on it at all, Jewish logic is that whatever it means, it was not 24 hour human days. Heck, in the 10th century, Rabbi Isaac of Acko used Kabbalistic logic to estimate the age of the universe and his estimate is about the same as today’s physicists. (I find this very impressive because in the 10th century, they didn’t really have anything in the "Billions." So, to assert the Universe was billions of years old…pretty wild stuff.
