Child and Adolescent Services
Children and teens might come for help in dealing with school problems, getting along with peers or parents, struggles with self-esteem, eating disorders, body image and weight issues, tensions of dating or not dating, confusion of needs for dependence and independence, financial pressures, drug and substance abuse problems, depression, rape, sexual abuse, sexual identity and any other issue, problem or concern they may have.
- Individual Counseling and Play Therapy
Counseling is provided for children and adolescents on a one-to-one basis or as appropriate in conjunction with parents and family. The playroom at JFS is utilized to elicit the thoughts and feelings of children through play. Important items used to help the child recreate family dynamics and difficulties are the dollhouse and action figures. The child can also create and destroy using Playdoh. In addition, the child can demonstrate her feelings and create a story with the use of markers and crayons. Further feelings and thoughts can be expressed with the help of therapeutic games and books. Finally, the child can express his competitive feelings and need for control through board games. It is through play therapy that the child conveys the struggle he or she is experiencing. These clinical services are offered by NYS-licensed social workers, and are on a sliding fee scale for those who cannot afford the full fee.
- Therapeutic, Support and Discussion groups
"My parents are divorcing, what happens to ME?" and several other time- limited, common-issue youth groups are offered at a level appropriate to the age range being addressed.
