Parenting Services

Forever working toward Strengthening Families -- May 2003, JFS participated in a two-day training sponsored by Rockland Council on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependence. The training was for a countywide collaboration of many Rockland Agencies to culminate in several seven-week programs each to work with 8-10 families of youth in varying age groups. The participating families have fun in activities and games while working together to discover what makes their family strong and learning how to better solve problems together. The program is designed to help youth and parents prepare for teen years and to avoid problems that could lie ahead through learning skills to strengthen family communication, to handle frustration, peer pressure, and for learning a mutual empathy and appreciation for each other. This is a preventative program that runs several times a year at various Rockland locations.

The Bobbi Lewis Parenting Program, currently not running seeks sponsors yearly in order to support and continue the services of this program. Any interested benefactors please contact Sylvia Kaufman at 845-354-2121

The goal of this program is to improve the lives of children, and to help strengthen their families. Jewish Family Service (JFS) clinicians work with families to improve their parenting abilities; to develop better problem-solving, coping and communication skills; and to engage in better decision-making. The overall process is designed to help families to learn skills that discourage destructive anger and encourage respect, empathy, communication, cooperation and negotiation, so that parents in their new understanding can better produce healthy, developmentally appropriate bonds with their children and begin to better meet their (children's) needs.

JFS clinicians provide a range of services appropriate to each individual family's needs, some being: child assessment and counseling, individual counseling of family members, marital and family counseling, parent education, parenting workshops, anger management groups, therapeutic supervised visitation, and mothers and fathers parent and step-parent support groups.
