Volunteering
Whether you are looking for volunteer work that is clerical in nature, program oriented, or that will make use of your professional skills, JFS can find a place for you to make use of your talents. All volunteers are trained and supervised by JFS staff.
Volunteers complete an application and a confidentiality form and supply references for JFS to contact. Help us with distribution, people outreach, advertising, marketing, social work, writing, etc. If you offer it, we'll find a good way to put it to use. If you have an idea, or there is a need, we will create the program. For further information on volunteering at JFS contact: Jackie Leary, Coordinator of Volunteer Services (845) 354-2121, ext. 166.
- Deliver Birth Baskets
Welcome Jewish newborns to our community by delivering gift bags to their moms at Nyack and Good Samaritan Hospitals. Help to familiarize unaffiliated families with Jewish community resources in Rockland County. These bags include a membership discount for the Rockland JCC-Y, a resource guide to Jewish parenting, information on the Jewish holidays, JFS' "Shalom Rockland" publication, a free subscription to the Rockland Jewish Reporter, a delightful baby calendar for marking milestones in the baby's first year, and various manufacturer donated gifts as well.
- Send-A-Friend
Offer companionship. This program trains volunteers to visit elderly persons who are homebound because of illness or disability and who are often or always alone and lonely. Each volunteer is matched with a client who has been assessed as appropriate for the program. JFS visits offer companionship and help these individuals to feel less isolated as they receive the support and reassurance that someone cares. Becoming a Send-a-Friend volunteer is a major mitzvah and is usually as rewarding to the volunteer as it is to the recipient.
- The Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry at JFS
Jewish Family Service has partnered with many synagogues in the county to provide kosher, non-perishable food for families in need. JFS, always keeping all inquiries and family identity strictly confidential, writes grants, processes applications, and issues vouchers to families. Volunteers collect, shop, restock pantry shelves, organize and bag foods so that one Sunday per month Kosher food, free of charge, is available to those in need. Contact 354-2121.

- Telephone Reassurance
This program provides homebound elderly in Rockland with regularly scheduled weekly telephone contact from a trained volunteer. Because many elderly are hesitant to allow strangers into their homes, a telephone friend can provide the opportunity to establish a meaningful relationship. Individuals can feel less isolated and receive the support and reassurance that someone cares.
- Computer training for the Homebound Elderly
Teach computer skills to homebound elderly who own computers so they can be better able to communicate with the outside.
- Hebrew Free Loan
Be a loan-officer for no-interest loans available to members of the Jewish community for a maximum of $1500.
- Office Assistance
Help with clerical assignments in our front office - typing, preparing mailings, photocopying, faxing, data entry, collating flyers, and putting together birth basket materials.
- Committee Member
Help implement agency programs and special events by joining a JFS planning committee.
